Paving the way for the school's future
Sam Houston High School, located on the East Side of San Antonio, has a proud history of academic and athletic success: one graduate is an astronaut and many others have played in professional sports leagues.
San Antonio Independent School District selected KAI for the 25,000 SF, $11.9 million Career & Technical Education (CTE) addition and renovation at the New Tech Academic and Traditional Educational Academic Wings in the existing facility, which was built in the late 1950s. Our task was to enhance the future of Sam Houston High School with new spaces for the three different schools-within-a-school: New Tech, Career & Technology Education (CTE) and Traditional.
Sam Houston High School has award-winning public service programs in Culinary Arts and Cosmetology in addition to Robotics, Engineering and Construction trades. KAI designed the addition to blend old with new and establish a welcome place for students to learn and prepare for college or career. The emphasis of all-around learning is evident in the public indoor/outdoor café associated with the Culinary Arts.
The entry courtyard is welcome and inviting for students and teachers with a new Go Center in the school, which is a college readiness and counseling area for students preparing for life after high school.

The Impact
Supporting military roots
San Antonio, known as Military City, USA and Sam Houston High School has a very strong JROTC program, which was permanently relocated from an old metal building into the new addition with large classrooms, rifle range, and internal drill space that opens to a large outdoor paved drill area. The new parking area is striped for band practice.
