In 2020, the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) passed a Bond that benefited schools across the district providing $1.3 billion in upgrades involving 36 campuses. This included 21 schools with main buildings that had not been renovated in more than 50 years, and most with 30-year-old infrastructure. Funds were also dedicated to complete campus renovations at 15 schools that received partial renovations under the 2010 and 2016 Bonds.

After collaborating with SAISD at Sam Houston High School for more than a decade, KAI kicked off the next phase of the expansion in 2021 to finish out the campus and an aggressive renovation of the athletic facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these facilities had several functional deficiencies requiring a complete overhaul.

SAISD selected KAI to lead the architectural design and engineering for extensive upgrades to much of the campus, new additions and expansions, and the replacement and renovation of nearly all the existing athletic facilities. Primary areas of the campus renewal involved classroom technology enhancements, Theater Arts/Drama, Athletics/Physical Education, and exterior amenities. The improvements included:

  • New wired/wireless components for high-speed connectivity for learning in every classroom, science lab and other areas of campus
  • Classroom audio systems, interactive smart boards, support tools and student devices
  • A Dance Space with a taller room to accommodate an elevated observation catwalk, an abundance of tall mirrors, and separate locker rooms
  • A theater with interior finishes that require a consistent upgrade, seats replaced with cushioned bottoms, a more secure sound system, accessible loading dock, green room, black box theatre addition, and upgrade to exterior door hardware
  • A Cyber P-Tech Lab with more in-floor power outlets/data connections in the center of the spaces where computer workstations are located, and more secure storage for laptop computers and space for collaboration
