University of Missouri Health Care (UMHC) is a network of five hospitals in Columbia, MO as well as numerous clinics statewide. Part of the University of Missouri Health Care’s overall strategic plan for growth was increasing service areas such as surgery and orthopedics. In support of this plan and the System’s mission to provide patients with world-class care in a convenient and comfortable environment, the University of Missouri Health Care (UMHC) chose to expand and upgrade their facilities at the University Hospital on the Columbia campus. KAI provided construction management services for their Patient Care Tower at the University of Missouri Health Care Hospital.
The upgrades to the Patient Care Tower include the addition of a new, 259,605 SF surgery tower and 42,000 SF of associated renovations at the University Hospital.
The new seven-story tower increases the University of Missouri Health Care Hospital’s surgical capabilities by adding:
- 15 inpatient operating rooms
- 118 private adult-care beds
- 48 adult intensive care beds
- A procedure suite
- Three interventional radiology rooms
- Two cardiac catheterization labs
- A radiology suite with equipment including an MRI, two CT scanners, two flat film cameras, three ultrasound cameras and two nuclear cameras
- Support spaces including a cafeteria, administrative offices, materials management and central sterile

The Impact
Creating Jobs in Healthcare
The opening of the new University Hospital addition creates nearly 100 new jobs, with the majority of those as nursing positions, but also including positions in pharmacy, housekeeping and nursing support. But more than that, the tower will continue to have a significant impact for years to come by creating new jobs and by improving the health of countless people into the future, advancing the health of all Missourians.
