Front of Dunbar High School

Providing practical training and industry experience

Dunbar High School’s Aviation Maintenance Education Center
Fort Worth Independent School District
Fort Worth, TX

To enhance Dunbar High School’s Aviation Engineering and Technology program, the Fort Worth School District formed an educational collaboration with Bell Helicopter, Lockheed Martin and Tarrant County College District to add a hangar and classroom at the school that will store airplanes and equipment for practical training and industry-based curriculum.

KAI designed the state-of-the-art $1.5 million Aviation Maintenance Education Center (AMEC) and classroom following FAA airport standards including layout, durable materials, exterior sheeting, door system, height and roof pitch. Bell donated a helicopter shell that is mounted on a pedestal outside the building.

Funded by FWISD’s 2013 Capital Improvement Program, the Dunbar AMEC complements the District’s Gold Seal Aviation Technology Program, part of the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) efforts. CTE programs engage students in the learning process by providing them with a real-world perspective on employment opportunities after high school, and provide technical training, certifications, college-credit courses, and exposure to job fields.

The Impact

Equipping students with real-word experience.

The new hangar and classroom support FWISD's special Gold Seal Aviation Technology CTE Program. The program equip students for career or college with skills and authentic experiences that will enable them to find opportunities that are in high demand. Students earn certifications upon completion of the program, and then have the opportunity to work as an intern or full-time for Bell or Lockheed Martin.
