It is not a trade‑off; it’s an investment.

Recently, KAI President Darren James was a featured speaker at the Dallas-Fort Worth Vistage Executive Summit. A 10-year Vistage member, Darren shared his firsthand experience on the importance of community involvement, not just for architecture, engineering and construction firms, but for businesses across all industries.

When people ask me about leadership, I often turn the question around: What are you doing to give back? For me, community involvement isn’t separate from business; it’s fundamental to how I lead.

As President of a national design and construction services firm now in our 46th year, with offices in Atlanta, Dallas–Fort Worth, and St. Louis. Our work spans aviation, healthcare, education, and civic projects, but our real mission goes beyond buildings. At KAI, one of our core values is giving back, and our vision is centered on transforming communities, not just constructing them.

We don’t just build projects; we work to Transform Communities.

That belief shapes how I choose my civic and board involvement. I focus on organizations that enhance quality of life, especially for youth, and that create aspirational opportunities whether through parks, cultural institutions, or education. Serving on boards like the Dallas Museum of Art, Trinity Park Conservancy, and Fair Park First allows me to help strengthen communities by applying business discipline, strategic thinking, and long‑term vision to public‑facing organizations.

Balancing these commitments with running a company requires intention. We’ve built strong leadership layers at KAI so the business continues to perform while we’re out serving. Just as important, I’ve learned when to say no and when to say yes, this ensures my time and energy are spent where they can have the greatest impact.

Civic engagement is leadership development in real time. Community involvement isn’t separate from business, it’s fundamental to leadership.

Community involvement also strengthens our business. It expands our networks, builds trust, and develops leadership skills within our team. At KAI, civic engagement isn’t optional it is expected at every leadership level.

In the end, giving back makes our communities stronger, our people better leaders, and our organization more resilient. It is not a trade‑off; it’s an investment.
