Developing a desirable, walkable community
KAI teamed with a national developer and the New Orleans Neighborhood Development Collaborative (NONDC) to redevelop the C.J. Peete public housing site which was originally constructed in 1941. In 1998, the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) began demolishing the buildings with the ultimate goal of revitalization. These plans were delayed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The design became a disaster relief effort for housing, redeveloping the existing historic residential building and a community building that include a business center to house supportive services programs.
HANO, public agency and financing requirements for the project focused on an accelerated design and construction delivery schedule. These needs were met by working closely with the general contractor and embracing an integrated fast-track delivery approach that resulted in a desirable, walkable community with a high-quality built product.

The Impact
Creating a sense of place.
From the beginning of the community engagement process, the design team sought to balance the needs of the project’s stakeholders. The final site plan reconnects the existing street grid and created pockets of greenspace that provide a sense of place and identity to each part of the redevelopment. The buildings feature the various and rich architectural heritage of New Orleans, along with design features that meet requirements for LEED certification.
