Providing a sustainable facility for community health and growth

O'Fallon Park Rec Complex
City of St. Louis
St. Louis, MO

The City of St. Louis wanted a new community recreation center on the City’s North Side to serve as a youth and elderly outreach facility, encouraging all ages to be engaged in the community. KAI was tasked with designing the O’Fallon Park Rec Complex to not only accommodate a broad range of athletic activities, but the entire community as well.

Based on community input and the City’s objectives, KAI designed a $14.7 million, 75,000 SF community recreation center located in the City’s O’Fallon Park. The new, two-story recreation complex includes an indoor aquatic center with zero-depth entry, interactive water play features, lazy river, water slides, three lap lanes, sauna and steam room. An additional pool is included outdoors, with five lap lanes, two-story water slide, climbing wall, and family area. Community activity spaces include a gymnasium with two, full-sized basketball courts and elevated track; 5,776 SF fitness and weight room; multi-purpose rooms for youth and senior outreach programs; aerobic rooms and an indoor/outdoor dining area. The facility was designed for sustainability and efficiency and is LEED certified at the Silver level.

KAI used BIM software to produce working models of the facility, enhancing communication and collaboration among the project team.

The Impact

Engaging the entire community.

Creating spaces for each demographic segment of the community was extremely important to the design of this facility. All age groups have spaces and programs designed specifically for them, while also enjoying communal spaces for all. Younger children enjoy the pool splash parks, family areas and playrooms. A Teen Hub contains exergaming activities, pool, ping pong and computer stations. Youth and teen outreach programs include Climbing Above Conflict, Youth in Government, literacy programs, and additional programs provided by the Boys & Girls club of Greater St. Louis. Programming for adults and seniors includes active older adult socials, diverse fitness classes and specialized aquatics. A senior center provides designated space for senior community members to gather. The new O'Fallon Park Rec Complex beautifully serves the entire north St. Louis community, promoting health and wellness for all.

"We are thrilled to be a member of the O'Fallon Park community. In cooperation with the City of St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, we've created a place where children, families and adults can come together to practice healthy principles, socialize and feel a sense of community."
