Updating a school's identity

Omaha Public Schools selected KAI to provide professional design services for their new high school. The project consists of two new building additions totaling $11.4 million.

The first addition to the school is a new 9,750 SF multipurpose physical education space located adjacent to the existing gymnasium, with a direct connection to the gym through the first floor and mezzanine level. The addition includes a training room and concessions, and the current weight room and equipment will be relocated to the mezzanine. The former weight room space was converted into a dedicated wrestling room for the wrestling program. A new canopy was constructed on the south side of the new addition and existing gym entry.

The second addition gives the main entry a new image, creating a visible marker or “beacon” from the street and parking lots. The design relocated the administrative and counseling offices and reoriented the existing commons to create a new inviting entry and centrally-located commons that incorporates the ceremonial circular stair. The design also includes a new secure vestibule for the safety of students, staff and visitors. The former office spaces were converted to classrooms. KAI’s engineers also provided design for fire, life safety, security and technology upgrades.
