Recreation for all ages
Following receipt of a grant, the City of St. Louis hired KAI to determine the level of public support for a new community recreation facility on the City’s southside that would be intentionally be oriented to all ages – from youth to seniors. KAI completed a detailed analysis and study regarding the level of interest, desired activities, facilities and amenities, payment options, potential sites and potential partners. The survey’s results revealed that there was significant support for a community recreation complex to serve all residents, especially teenagers, preschool and schoolage children, and seniors.
Based on this community input and the City’s objectives, KAI designed a two-story, 75,000 SF, $14 million community recreation complex located in Carondelet Park. Designers created an open, light-filled, welcoming facility filled with amenities for all ages. Included are a two-court gym with elevated track, two-story fitness center, aerobics rooms, youth game/multipurpose room, senior community space, childcare, an indoor/outdoor dining area, and indoor and outdoor pools. The pools are a popular amenity, featuring zero-depth entry, lazy river, water slide, whirlpool, steam room and sauna, and lap and recreation areas. The outdoor pool also includes a diving board, splash park for children, a preschool pool and a concession area.
KAI used Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to produce working models of the facility, enhancing communication and collaboration among the project team.
