Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower
Village of Hartford, Illinois

Owner/Client: Village of Hartford, Illinois
Size/area: 190 feet tall
Construction Cost: $4.3 million
KAI Services: Construction Management, Architecture, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Project Management

Background:
The Village of Hartford wanted a memorial constructed to provide a unique and lasting tribute to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. KAI provided architectural, engineering, and construction management services for this unique memorial tower located in Hartford, Illinois. The twin concrete towers are 190’ in height with three observation platforms overlooking the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. KAI was initially hired to perform the architectural and MEP design and was later requested to provide construction management.

Solution:
KAI’s design of an elegant tower achieves both the functional and aesthetic goals of the Village of Hartford. The tower consists of two shafts - one for the elevator and one for the stairway - two shafts connected by three concrete lookout platforms that join the towers into a single structural entity. The shafts represent Lewis and Clark; the structural lookout platforms represent the various stages of their expedition. The facility has been designed for phased construction to dovetail with the fundraising activities of the Village of Hartford.
